When we think of Energy Freedom, we might think of selling excess solar generated electricity to the Power Company, or storing it in batteries for overnight use. But we use SO MUCH power at home, most people laugh at the concept of living off what they could generate from solar. What is the answer? Our lifestyle too often interferes with this goal! We will talk about that, but ...
What about our cars?
What happens when we need to reduce the use of fuel? You could consider the alternative of the most abundant thing on Earth. You know that WATER is Hydrogen and Oxygen in compressed form, readily available, and safe to store. You can use Hydrogen On Demand to Convert your Car to BURN WATER with gasoline (petrol,) and make your car into a Water Hybrid Car. Ethanol in NOT the answer.
Use of Ethanol was mandated to reduce our dependency on Oil, and give us a clean burning alternative. Well it does burn cleaner, but it still has emissions. When you add to that the emissions of about 80% as much petroleum fuel used to produce and deliver it, we have an inefficient, costly and polluting alternative. PLUS we now have used a significant amount of our farming for fuel production, and food prices go up DRAMATICALLY. This is partly because of supply and demand, and partly because of the fact that it costs so much in petroleum fuels to make this inefficient effort work. That is right! Ethanol is less efficient as a fuel. You need more to go the same distance. When you buy "gasohol," you will not go as far between fill-ups. On the other hand, Hydrogen On Demand is capable of supplementing that fuel and IMPROVING the economy, but you dont have to wreck the system to utilize it!
We need a Powerful Fuel that is Cheap and Clean!
Now we can consider what qualifies as a GOOD alternative fuel. It needs to Cheap and Plentiful. That describes a lot of different things! What we need is a fuel that burns clean with good properties, and lots of power! Hydrogen On Demand meets these requirements, plus, it is SAFE! You do not need to drive around with tanks of presurized hydrogen behind your head! You don't need to look for one of a handful of filling stations that offer hydrogen. Admittedly, this article is more about the general Energy Freedom we all seek, and less about the particular reduction of our demand for Gasoline. We will try to make application where it is appropriate, but there is more specific info in some of these other articles, if that is what you need at the moment.
Why doesn't my Electric Meter run backwards?
I am generating electricity using solar power, and I expect to see some results! But we need to reduce our usage before this is a reality. Recently, a national Radio Talk Show host made fun of the idea that we could generate electricity with solar power, and have our electric meter running backwards. Well, at the rate this person uses it, it is not realistic. This works only when you use less than you produce. There are ways to reduce demand for power, though.

How can I lower my Power Bill?
There are proven methods that reduce our use of electricity. Some require conservation, and others use a different power source. Electricity is an EXPENSIVE way to generate heat! If we use Electric Resistance, there is heat, but at a high cost. Heat Pumps are more efficient, but only down to a certain level. Once it gets too cold out, there isn't much heat to pump from that air! If your system seems to use a HUGE amount of power on cold days, you can be pretty sure that it is using the resistive heat coils to generate most of it. Now, you are back where you started, but have the heated air forced through duct work, and there is more loss there!
Use of GAS requires one of a number of sources for energy besides Electricity. Gas may be Propane (LP Gas,) or Natural Gas. These are more plentiful, and systems are in place to deliver them. If Natural Gas Pipelines are not available in your area, you can buy or rent a tank that is filled with Propane on a periodic basis. Of course, this can be expensive, but it may be the best way to get off high usage from the Electric Power Grid. It should be noted that some people have experimented using Hydrogen On Demand for supplementing combustion in some of the appliances and machines we use Gas to power.
Heat is the Big item around here!
A Gas Furnace will do that job more efficiently. Oil is good as well. All of these are expensive to install and operate, but in order to reduce the demand for electricity, and make Solar an option, one of these methods must be in place.
Air Conditioning is a big use of electric power, and I am not sure we have a ready-made option there. Newer systems are more efficient, and that may be the best we can do for now. These may run on the amps generated by solar, but the starting of induction motors requires a Huge jolt. A Capacitor is good for keeping this from ruining some equipment, but it will take a BIG Capacitor to give the few seconds of amperage that is needed to start most Central A/C units. Other alternatives include small window units for rooms where you sleep, etc. These will run on generators OK, and should even start with a Solar System.
Hot Water seems to be another big use!
Solar Water Heaters are being used everywhere now. Once installed, the Sun's energy heats water, so you do not need to do it another way. I expect this to be a supplemental system, though, with a Hot Water Circulating System, and a storage tank, you may not use much other power at all. In addition to this idea is the Gas Water Heater (this could be the other source.) I like this because the burning gas generates heat. It is good at it, and it reduces our need for Electricity.
Where else can I use Gas instead of Electricity?
Other areas can be addressed where we typically use electricity to produce heat. Many of these can, also, be done with Gas. In the following paragraphs are some good alternatives. Once we fix the big things, THEN we look at which light bulb is using less "juice." We might even make our most vital lighting run on Direct Current (DC) as an emergency system when we are at maximum conservation. It may not be all the time, but we can get an AC/DC TV, Radio, and other vital units, so we are not completely isolated during a blackout. If the Solar system is in place, this is a simple addition, and is something used on travel trailers that operate in the woods on batteries alone.
But we have a huge family, and use power continuously!
A Gas Dryer, and a Gas Range and Oven, can cover much of our everyday use of power. Some actually prefer that a gas Range puts the heat where you need it, regardless of the shape of the pan, and it is full-on, or all-the-way off in an instant. I like a gas dryer, as it uses very little gas, and only enough electric "juice" to tumble the clothes, run the blower and operate the controls.
Our Gas Freezer does not use ANY electricity. A modest size tank in the backyard keeps the freezer and dryer fueled for about six months. We have depended on this freezer when storms knock out our power. Also, a gas grill with a side burner can work in pinch if you haven't converted to a gas range as yet.
A Gas Refrigerator is another great alternative, and will round-out your main electricity saving steps. These may be a bit bigger outside, and smaller inside, and you can expect them to be more expensive. The idea becomes much more detailed at this point.
We have covered most of the bases, now we look for a small item or technique that will actually show in our demand. Now, when you turn out a light, you can measure the difference! At this point, you, also, are paying the minimum power bill, and the fees and taxes are most of what is on there. If they are to supply lines, poles, and service, it will cost you something regardless of your usage. Just call a plumber, and see that mobilization (getting a man and his truck to your location when you request it) is a big expense. They will charge $80 or $125 or some set fee just to have them at your disposal, even if it is just to tighten a screw. They have to buy gas, too, you know!
What about Skylights, and things like that?
I think we can reduce a significant use of power on lights if we don't need them in the daytime. If we put a skylight or other specialized system there, we only need power for lights when it is dark outside. Almost everyone has a spot in the house where they need light in the daytime. It may be a hallway, closet, or another room that doesn't get much or ANY light from windows. There are products that handle this well, but be sure you ALWAYS want light there. If there are computer monitors or TV's that will be hard to see (or if you like an afternoon nap,) be sure not to put a PERMANENT light source there!
SO, how do I generate electricity for the few things left?
At this date, Solar Power Panels & Power Inverters are the conventional method, but they are not the most efficient, by the admission of those in the indusrty. We are hoping to see more efficient panels, and the latest Power Inverters have improved their power curve, but for now, we need to do what we can with what is available. It is reasonable to assume that, with all these measures in place, that a sunny day will have times we are generating more power than we use. Laws require the Power Companies to buy the excess, or we can store it
Solar Power Storage with Batteries is our best aternative, but it has its own expense and issues. The batteries are expensive, and must be recycled or disposed when they no longer work. These are not your standard Deep Cycle Marine Batteries, but work in similar ways.

What about Windmills?
Wind Generation has promise in certain situations, but these "Windmills" have certain minimum and maximum wind speeds. Most available systems need a constant wind over about 10 or 15 mph (16 or 24 kph) to do anything, and peak out at around 25 to 30 mph (40 to 48 kph.) But most cannot generate power if wind speeds exceed a certain level. If you do use these measures, be sure not to let them hit anything or anybody. They need to be mounted high enough for that, and to get the wind that is not blocked by houses and trees.
Expect to pay a couple of thousand dollars for a wind generator, in addition to all the other items needed to store and invert the power you generate. This may not be feasible if you do not have winds consistently, or winds high enough. If you typically have winds over about 50 mph (80 kph,) make sure you get a specialized unit that works at higher speeds. You may need an array of different units to maximize output at any level of wind speed.
How is this going to help me?
Not only will you benefit from greater independence (important to just about anyone) you can save money in the long run, and NOT be in huge trouble because of a blackout. Windstorms, Icestorms, and general econonic and political troubles can affect our power grid adversely. We may be counting on something that may not always be there, or may, if bad maters get worse, not be there at all!
What will you do when you are no longer able to get power from the Electric Grid? Some friends of mine were out of power for a month after a hurricane. Others were out of power for weeks when a freak Icestorm shut the electric distribution lines down in a normally temperate Southern area of the US. When it is that cold, and you are not prepared, you can be in desparate shape. Why be so dependent on others, when it is possible to claim and establish your independence?

What if Gas gets REALLY expensive, or is rationed?
This brings us back to discussing your use of petroleum fuels (gasoline, diesel, etc.) in cars and trucks. If you cannot get to work, you are in BIG trouble. If things get too bad, you won't be able to afford food, and other essentials! What will you do? If you know any Truckers, tell them about Hydrogen On Demand. It can mean the difference in success or failure. If you get this information, and it saves enough gas, we may reverse certain ugly trends. We may be able to see a reduction in demand for Petroleum fuels that brings down prices.
If you know of businesses (delivery, service, sales, etc.) that depend on transportation, you can tell them, or, once you have a working knowledge of Hydrogen On Demand, make a few of these devices to sell them. You can profit, and they can stay in business! That sounds good for everyone, right?
